CONNGI

The project

The National Coordination Mechanism of the New Italian Generation (CONNGI) Association for Social Promotion was created in 2017 as a result of the empowerment process, started in 2014 thanks to the activities promoted by the Ministry of Labour and Social Policies, of several associations of youths with migratory background who decided to represent their generation united. The CONNGI now gathers 32 associations who are committed to advocating for the active participation of Third Country Nationals, the recognition of their rights, as well as promoting several actions related to education, labour and social inclusion.  

The main objectives of the CONNGI are: to promote a new approach to inclusion and participation policies that takes more into consideration the real needs of the new generations and to create and consolidate collaborations with institutions and organizations, in order to promote a profitable exchange between associations that represent young people with a migratory background and represent them jointly at national and international level. This is achieved by organizing activities based on the principles and priorities set out in their Manifesto, a programmatic document signed by all their members and regularly updated. The 2019 version has the following key components: school, work, culture sport and participation, citizenship and political representation.  

First of its kind, CONNGI is an innovative initiative as it promotes a new approach to the policies for the inclusion of TCNs and youths with migratory background, while advocating for their rights and creating a horizontal and vertical multi-level dialogue.  

The impact of the good practice

CONNGI is now present in 14 cities, counts more than 4200 members, 70% of who are below 30 years old. Their commitment and support to the “cause” of the New Italian Generation is well-recognized at any level, and, for this reason, they are now part of several coordination mechanisms discussing TCNs’ priorities and needs, among which the Committee for Migration and Development, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the National Observatory for the integration of students with migratory background, led by the Ministry of Education.
