Training on education

The project

The Head of the Unit for Integration and Support of Unaccompanied Minors – Special Secretariat for the Protection of Unaccompanied Minors – Greek Ministry of Migration & Asylum, Dr. Angeliki Aroni,  given her 15 years’ experience as an expert and trainer on educational sector, initiated an action of a six month training on education addressed to non-formal educators working in accommodation facilities for Unaccompanied Migrant Children (shelters, safe zones and SIL apartments). Its duration is 15/1/2020 until 25/6/2021 and the character is voluntary with the support of several NGOs.

More specifically, the educators were invited to attend a six month e-learning training composed by 15 workshops held on a weekly basis. Each week an NGO with educational expertise and experience on teaching methods with third country national students was invited to provide a one-off workshop. 

The curriculum of the workshops was composed by: 

• learning methodology of the Greek language (most educators were philologists and teachers);  
• learning of the institutional and bureaucratic procedures for the formal education (enrollments, final annual exams etc.);  
• building capacity on the European lifestyle especially with regards to gender equality and rights and using appropriate learning tools;  
• training on vocational career student counselling and connection to the labor market;  
• supervision and support by specialized psychologists on learning about trauma, boundaries, and conflict management.

The impact of the good practice

The educators of non-formal education working with UMC are becoming more familiar with the necessary procedures and receive practical solutions in overcoming several barriers with enrollments. Additionally, the educators are provided with a homogeneous suggested learning material for non-formal education and last but not least a network of educators of non-formal education for UMC has been created that enables participants the exchange of knowledge and information.
